With national cybersecurity day approaching on the 30th November, here at Off The Record Models, we thought we’d discuss how to keep yourself safe on webcam model websites as a cam girl. It’s really important that you’re doing everything you can to keep yourself safe. Although you’re not meeting clients personally, it’s still imperative that you are taking the right safety precautions to feel protected online.
Where to Start
Protection on webcam model websites might sound daunting, but once you understand the basics, you’ll be absolutely fine. As experienced cam models ourselves, we’re always on hand to help with any questions you may have as well! Our top tips and advice have all come from our own experiences, so trust us, we know what works. If you invest in safe habits now, they will become part of your working routine. You won’t think twice about having these precautions in place as your camming career progresses.
First things first, invest in some good anti-virus software. It’s a great first step to ensure that you are taking extra safety measures when camming. Anything reputable like Norton or Avast will work just fine. On-demand scans are quick and real-time protection will be available without you having to do anything at all. It should be highlighted that you shouldn’t click on any unknown links from clients, just in case they contain harmful malware.
Make Your Socials Private
Webcam model websites often encourage the promotion of social media. Although it’s a great way to promote your shows and content, it can be viewed by anyone. It’s definitely best to privatise your camming accounts across any platforms. If you want to keep your work and private life separate, be sure to keep your name, location and job title completely different. Never post the same images across your 2 accounts – anyone could make the connection between your profiles. It doesn’t take a genius to use ‘reverse image search’ on Google.
Don’t Exchange Real Life Personal Information
Touching on the above, never give your real name, your address, bank information or personal phone number to anyone. Even if you’ve been speaking to your regular customers for a long time, you should never feel like you have to give your personal information out. Sometimes, clients will ask you a lot of questions because the want to get to know you, but you always have control to tell them exactly what you want. We’d suggest having an alias at the ready, should you get taken by surprise. Additionally, you can make yourself look different. Use wigs on webcam model websites and apply your makeup differently to how you usually would.
Change Your Location
If you want to protect your identity further, we recommend setting your location to somewhere else in the UK to avoid direct location searches. Be extra careful with what you’re revealing during your shows. Avoid showing your clients around your room and be cautious about what they can see on camera when the camera is stationary. A view of your window could reveal your actual location. Be careful not to talk about local events in passing conversation also – always be friendly but ambiguous to keep yourself safe online.
